Green card is a term commonly used to refer to the permanent resident card issued to a Permanent Resident of the United States of America.

Fun fact: Post world war 2, the Alien Registration Receipt Card issued to United States immigrants was made out of a special pale green paper. People started to refer to it as “green card” and the name has stuck ever since.

A Green Card holder (permanent resident) is someone who has been granted authorization to live and work in the United States on a permanent basis.

There are plenty ways one can apply for a green card. They’re broken down into 4 major categories:

  1. Green card through Family including green card through Marriage
  2. Green card through Employment
  3. Green card through Asylee or Refugee status
  4. Green card lottery, special categories, and programs
